Macedonians (Greeks)

Macedonians ((ギリシア語:Μακεδόνες, ''Makedónes'')) are a regional and historical population group of ethnic Greeks, inhabiting or originating from the Greek region of Macedonia, in Northern Greece. Today, most Macedonians live in or around the regional capital city of Thessaloniki and other cities and towns in Greek Macedonia, while many have spread across Greece and in the diaspora. The indigenous Greek Macedonians have a heritage and identity distinct from that of the Slav Macedonians, who now mainly inhabit the neighboring Republic of Macedonia. The modern-day Greek Macedonians consider themselves descendants of the Ancient and Byzantine Greek Macedonians.〔See Peter Mackridge, 'Ourselves and Others: The Development of a Greek Macedonian Cultural Identity since 1912', Oxford & New York, 1997.〕
==Name==

The name Macedonia ((ギリシア語:Μακεδονία), ') comes from the ancient Greek word ('). It is commonly explained as having originally meant "a tall one" or "highlander", possibly descriptive of the people. The shorter English name variant ''Macedon'' developed in Middle English, based on a borrowing from the French form of the name, ''Macédoine''.〔''Oxford English Dictionary'', s.v. 'Macedon'〕
